Until his recent retirement, Dennis was a physicist at the Stanford Linear Accelerator where he was involved in experiments to detect dark matter. He also developed physics models for the simulation of high energy interactions at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN and continues to develop such models for the Geant4 radiation simulation toolkit.

He has been a part of the International Space Elevator Consortium since 2013, works on dynamics calculations and simulations for the space elevator, and currently serves as its Vice President. Dennis and his wife Linda live in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
